A brief highlight of some of the new features in the next release of CiteSpace 7.0.1. This blog will be updated accordingly as more features coming through.

A New Visualization Type

In addition to the legacy Cluster View, Circular View, Timeline View, Timezone View, Landscape View, and Heatmap View, a new visualization type will be included in CiteSpace 7.0.1. The following is a new visualization of the Demo project on Terrorism. Nodes are colors by their cluster membership.

A Network of Citing Articles with Bibliographic Coupling

A new node type of Article will be enabled in the new version. This is to replace the previously used node type of paper and source. A network of citing articles can be visualized based on bibliographic coupling, where the similarity between two articles is determined by how much of overlap they have in terms of the references they cited. Bibliographic coupling has been around for decades. It should offer alternative views to the scientific literature in addition to co-citation networks, which have been a primary focus of CiteSpace.

In contrast, the following is a co-citation network of the same dataset. Note that the co-citation network and the bibliographic coupling network differ in several ways: nodes: cited references vs. citing articles; links: co-citation vs. bibliographic coupling. Networks differ structurally and temporally.

SVG Updated

Another area of major updates is a comprehensive update of the family of SVG export functions, including 2D and 3D versions. The following is an example of a 2D SVG view.
